For families

An eye exam for someone you love, where they live

When getting out of the house is the hard part, we come to them. You decide how much you want to be part of the visit.

  • Where we visit

A private home, an apartment, a room in assisted living or a care home. If your family member lives in a facility, we coordinate with the front desk.

    • Homes and apartments

    • Assisted living rooms

    • Care homes

  • Who can be there

You can sit in, listen by phone or leave us to it. A family member who knows the history can fill us in on how the eyes and the glasses have been doing.

    • In the room

    • On the phone

    • Or not at all

  • Before the visit

Put the glasses your family member uses now, and any magnifiers, where we can find them. Have the insurance cards handy. We will ask for the rest at the visit.

    • Current glasses and magnifiers

    • Insurance cards

    • A list of medicines, if you have one

  • Making decisions

If your family member can't give consent, we talk with the person who makes their health decisions and explain what we are doing in simple words.

    • We explain each step

    • We ask before we begin

    • We stop when asked

  • After the visit

You get a written summary, a copy of the prescription and clear next steps. We send a note to the family doctor when there is something to follow up, with permission.

    • A written summary

    • A prescription copy

    • A note for the family doctor

  • Glasses

If new glasses are needed we order them the same day and bring them back to be fitted in person, in the same room.

    • Ordered at the visit

    • Fitted at home

    • Adjusted on later visits

What families ask first

My mother gets confused with strangers. Can you still see her?

Yes. We go slowly, explain each step before we do it and stop when she has had enough. You are welcome to stay beside her.

Do I need to be present?

No. If you can't be there, give us a phone number and we will call you after the visit and send the written summary.

What if she can't read the eye chart?

We have ways to measure vision that don't depend on reading letters. Many of our patients can't read a chart.

Will she need a second visit?

If she needs glasses, yes: a short visit to fit them. Some people also come back for a follow-up. We tell you before we leave.

  • Sudden vision loss, flashes of light, a curtain over your vision, a chemical splash or an eye injury needs care now. Call our office right away or go to an emergency room. If you can't reach us, call 911.

Book a home visit

A short call is enough. We will ask where the visit will be and who it is for.
